walking the dog

over the last couple of days i've been working on refining the site and creating a mobile version. i started doing this after i noticed how awkward the site was to navigate on my ipod touch. i wanted to try and keep as much functionality as i could, although i knew it would be tough to bring all the features to a screen that's only 300 pixels wide. the main differences, apart from the amended layout, are:
  • the tags button has disappeared from the main menu. however you can still view and click on the tags on the individual photos
  • the slideshow button has gone completely. this was always a bit of a shitty feature that felt tacked onto the site. it's just the same as the random button with someone pressing refresh every five seconds. at some point i'd like to improve this, but i don't consider it a great loss removing it
  • the archive page has been simplified to just show entries in a month by month view. it didn't seem practical to offer any other options, plus there's always the tags or search box if you want to find specific images.
  • all the links have been removed from the footer - but hey, why would you want to leave this beautiful site anyway?
apart from that, everything else should be there and should be working. having said that one fairly major hindrance in the redesign was the fact that the only mobile browser i have is my ipod touch so while i can build and test using that, i've no way of knowing how the site looks or works on say a blackberry or an android. if you have one, and the site doesn't look right, then let me know. although without that bit of hardware i'll still be unable to properly test it, so maybe let me know and supply me with your mobile device. ta.

by the way, this is jess, she's a cross between a border collie and, i dunno, something else. she likes long walks by the coast, having her belly tickled and the word 'ball'.
