the day after i managed to break the cycle of night-drinking/day-beaching and finally started to take pictures in alicante i headed to valencia. i went for another photowalk when i arrived, walking in no particular direction, and stumbled upon la ciudad de las artes y las ciencas - which translates as the city of arts and sciences. it's a huge complex of buildings that was constructed over the last 15 years and includes museums, an opera house and an aquarium. unfortunately, due to the unplanned nature of how i discovered the place, when i arrived most of the buildings were closing - but i wasn't too perturbed as the buildings themselves looked amazing. i've since read that it was (and is) a fairly controversial project and estimated to cost around €1.1 billion - a big chunk of spending for a country which now has considerable economic troubles. but as i strolled around the ciudad i was blissfully ignorant to these politics, instead i just marvelled at the stunning and inventive architecture and thought to myself - valencia is awesome
