no more waiting

no more waiting
i almost believed i was dead, there’ll be no more waiting, you’re gonna melt all the ice in our heads, there’ll be no more crying, you’re gonna make it all better instead
well it's been a while huh? this time i'm referring to arsenal's 9 year wait for silverware which finally ended yesterday when we came from behind to win the fa cup final. i wasn't sure how much of the football i'd be able to experience as i was also attending a friend's wedding in leeds on the same day. the venue was next door to a social club, and i managed to extricate myself from the nuptials to catch the end of the second half, which eventually became extra time and then the celebratory scenes. i don't think it's a club that is frequented by outsiders, and a combination of being dressed up in a suit and not being a white, working class northerner meant that i stood out somewhat. it also became very clear that everyone else in the bar were focussed on the big screen showing the rugby while i was literally the only person squinting at the small television showing the football. it wasn't a hostile atmosphere, which i had experienced in 2001 when we lost the cup final to liverpool, it was just completely apathetic. so my ecstatic screams when aaron ramsey scored the winner in extra time were met with confused looks and a deafening silence. after the match i read that a victory parade was planned for the following morning so i set my alarm for half 5 and caught the first bus back to london with the hope of being able to join in the celebrations with likeminded folk. i eventually made it to the parade just as the victory bus sped past (i swear it was travelling faster than my morning coach from leeds) and then caught the end of the celebrations outside the stadium. in an ideal world i would have spent more time in north london and less time in the north of england, but i'm more than happy to trade that for finally shaking that trophyless monkey off our backs. i'd forgotten how great it feels to win a trophy, and now that i'm living within walking distance of the stadium i can't wait for it to happen again. i just hope i won't have to wait another 9 years.
