if you have an aversion to flying and you find yourself in south america then i don't think it's really much of a hinderance. i was in the continent for over 2 years and travelled almost everywhere by road, in fact in that time there were only 5 places i visited by plane. these were canaima national park in venezuela, kaietuer falls in guyana, the galapagos in ecuador, viewing the nazca lines in peru and skydiving in argentina. and any aviophobia would surely be amplified by the small, light aircraft you need to board (or jump out of) to reach these otherwise inaccessible destinations. that being said the old adage about road travel being more dangerous than air travel felt especially true in south america. i was certainly more on edge as i navigated through the treacherous traffic and precarious mountain roads compared to floating above it all in a tin can in the sky.
