gauchito gil

i could just link to a wikipedia article for this, but instead i'm going to go that extra step and paraphrase what they have to say about gauchito gil - the dude in this argentinian roadside shrine.

the legend tells that antonio gil was a farmworker who a wealthy widow fell in love with. when her brothers and the head of the police (who was also in love with the widow) found out about their relationship, they accused him of robbery and tried to kill him. he enlisted in the army to escape them, fought against the paraguayan army, and returned to his village a hero. however when he arrived at his village, he was forced to return to the army to fight in the argentine civil war. not wanting to get involved in the 'brother vs brother' aspect of a civil war, gauchito gil deserted and went on the run. when he was finally caught, instead of being taken to trial, he was tortured and strung up by his feet. when the policeman was going to kill him, gauchito gil said to him: "your son is very ill, if you pray and beg me to save your child, i promise you that he will live. if not, he will die". the policeman showed no sympathy and killed gauchito gil by slitting his throat. upon returning to his village, the executioner learnt that his son was indeed very ill. frightened he prayed to gauchito gil to save his son, and true to gil's word he began to get better. the policeman then returned to give gil a proper burial, where he built a shrine and ensured that the story of this miracle would become a legend.
