while watching the
football celebrations take place on the streets of concepcion i bumped into a dude who i'd met when i first arrived in town. i got chatting to him and his friends, shared some beers and then got invited to go for a drive. my instincts told me to say no, as whilst the driver seemed like a nice guy, he had been and still was knocking back cans of lager. the devil on my shoulder told me that i'd have more fun if i got in the car than staying on the street so i got inside. to be honest, you take a risk getting in any kind of vehicle in south america, and i've certainly been on more hazardous journeys on my trip. the drive included stopping to pick up more beer, food, and visiting other celebrating supporters before it turned into an impromptu late night tour of the city. the driver couldn't really speak much english, and at best i was picking up about 40% of what he was saying, but it was still a fun experience. the only time i began to fear for my safety was when he was talking about something which i could not translate. he looked to me in the backseat, asking if i understood, and after mulling it over i decided to go for honesty and said no. he then proceeded to turn his whole body to face me, with his foot still on the pedal, and took his hands off the wheel as he gesticulated trying to get his point across. his girlfriend in the passenger seat grabbed the wheel in an attempt to keep the car straight, and i kept on saying
si in the hope that would appease him and send him back to the orthodox driving position.
