beach football
most british people don't have a lot of time for american english. it's spelt colour not color, you throw away things in rubbish bins not trash cans and summer is followed by autumn not fall. i've started to relax my stance on these differences and they annoy me less and less. in fact i even started using the word vacation when i've been conversing with non-british people - something which was pointed out to me by a horrified englishman. my argument was that i've been using the spanish word vacacion, so it was more natural to switch between. he (completely correctly) did not accept my argument. nevertheless i think travelling has made me phase out the more british aspects of my vocabulary - i rarely use the word knackered anymore - and consequently i've become less aggravated by american english. now, with that said, there's still one difference i refuse to accept: calling football soccer. you can't just create a new sport (american football), kind of based on a similar sport (rugby), then steal the name of another sport (football) and rename it in the process (soccer). i don't expect americans to like the game, they have their own sports and that's fine, but i still can't abide the word soccer. it was only when i came to save this image that i realised that i've performed an act more shameful than using the word vacation. i have a photo of kids playing football on the beach and called it beach soccer. please forgive me.
actually now i think of it using the word math instead of maths also really bugs me. i should probably stop thinking about this too much or this collection of words will just keep on growing.
