when i put my
bogota at night photo on facebook a couple of months ago one of my friends commented
wow...you are literally getting better as you go. 'i agree ' was my response, which probably sounds arrogant... perhaps as arrogant as reposting the comment here. well the reason i bring it up is because i do feel like i am getting better, to the extent that i'm not so keen on some of the photos that i put up at the start of my trip. or to put it another way, if i went back again i'm confident i'd produce a much better collection of photos. i choose to look at this in a positive way, i'm happy that i'm improving my skills and becoming more selective in what i'm posting. i hope that my technique continues to get better and it would be great if i look back in a few years at my 2012 shots with the same critical eye. with this in mind today's photo is a strange choice. it's a photo that i wouldn't have hesitated in uploading a few years back, but now i'm not so sure. i mulled it over for a while before i started to get tired of all that mulling. it's not a
smoking volcano, or a
huge waterfall, or a
wild animal - but there's still something i like about it. it's not going to become one of my (or probably anyone elses)
favourites, it's not a great illustration of my photographic ability or an interesting slice of south america. but it's pleasing enough on my eyes to be my choice for a thursday evening in august. so in summary, i feel like my photography has improved a lot in the last couple of years, and this isn't an example of that.
i had to remove some unattractive scaffolding, cables and other distractions from this photo - which you can see in the
original
