jose gregorio
it was fortunate that someone chose to label this piece of graffiti so i didn't end up with a tenzin delek situation again. furthermore when i googled the name i learnt that jose gregorio was quite an interesting character. he was born in venezuela in the late 19th century, travelled to france to study medicine before returning to his home country. there he became a popular figure providing free treatment to the poor and needy, using his own money to by them medicines. he was also alleged to have performed a number of miracles on his patients before he died aged 54 when he was struck down (by one of the first cars in the country) while delivering medicine to one of his patients. since his death his myth grew even bigger with more people claiming miracles after praying to him. even hugo chavez claimed that he was alive thanks to jose when he was treated for cancer in 2011. the catholic church took all this in and the pope declared him 'venerable' which is defined as having lived a life 'heroic in virtue' - one of the steps on the road to sainthood. there you go - don't say you never learn anything from this photoblog.
