stepping back in time
i went to the emirates last night to see arsenal play chelsea in the league cup, and it felt like i’d gone back in time. the tickets were easier (and considerably cheaper) to get hold of than for regular league games so with most of the stadium to choose from i elected to sit in the front row. i hadn’t sat that close for a while and it took me back to the days when we used to play at highbury - in fact my position was almost identical to where i was when i took the second photo i ever posted on this site. it gives you such a different perspective on the action when you sit that close. you appreciate the skill and technique of the players a lot more as you see the action at the same level as they do. however it’s really difficult to get an overview of the game, the positioning of all the players and what’s happening in the opposite corner as the viewing angle is so narrow. but it was that restrictive view which gave me such a warm sense of nostalgia - that’s how i used to watch football before my team moved to their huge stadium. unfortunately it wasn’t all warm reminiscence last night - yet again wenger failed to beat mourinho and i remembered how much i dislike chelsea as they knocked us out of the cup. the opposing fans ensured that my journey back home to clapham - a couple of miles south of chelsea - wasn’t too enjoyable either.
