am i giving enough?
it's not often that i'll go to a gig and know almost nothing about the band themselves - but it slowly dawned on me that was happening a few weeks ago when i went to see local natives. i mean i know their music, i've listened to and enjoyed both of their albums, but i know almost nothing about the people that made the music. when they appeared on stage it didn't take me long to discover that they actually have two lead singers - both of whom have deceptively similar voices. one of them has a beard and the other a moustache, but you can't really pick out that difference in audio form. i also learned that the beard guy (i really should look up his name) was the one who wrote/sang all of my favourite songs, from airplanes, to you and i to heavy feet. and i also learned that they're an amazing live act, who looked honoured to play and sang with genuine emotion. none more so than... ok i'll look up his name... than kelcey ayer when he performed a heartbreakingly haunting rendition of my favourite local natives song colombia.
