make the snow fall
after a 4 year abstinence i finally strapped a board to my feet in a recent trip to switzerland, and to capture the special occasion i bought a brand new toy for the trip - a gopro video camera. i strapped it to my helmet, filmed myself boarding down the mountain, and then watched the videos back on my phone in the evening. it was pretty cool, although it didn't take me long to realise that a pov video of someone snowboarding down a mountain isn't that captivating. in contrast a pov video of someone falling down a mountain - well that's far more entertaining. and i showed impressive prescience by performing my most spectacular tumble on my first day on the slopes. i messed up a simple turn on a black run and found myself careening down the piste, headfirst and on my back. i became engulfed in my own mini-avalanche as i tried to turn myself around and regain some form of control. it took an age before i eventually had my board below me and i was able to stop, by which stage i was completely covered in snow. from the outside the whole performance must have looked absolutely hilarious. somehow the camera remained on my head for the entire slide, so this is a still from the video of the incident.
the quality isn't great as a single image, however in motion i was able to record at 100fps which means i can slow down the video by four times and it still plays smoothly. so that's exactly what i did - check it out here
