the first time i visited new york 6 years ago i made a point of travelling all the way to coney island, only to discover that it gets kinda quiet at 10pm in mid september. at the time i said i'd like to return at a more sociable time, and back in june i did just that. in fact by chance i happened to be in town in perhaps the most sociable time of the year, the day of the mermaid parade. yeah don't worry, i hadn't heard of it either, but it seemed like a big deal around there. it was like a circus had opened it's doors and a bunch of freaks had fallen out and started parading around, and i mean that in the best possible way. after spending a week in miami beach which is full of beautiful, vain people it was refreshing to be on coney island beach full of people who didn't give a shit how they looked and just wanted to have fun.
