don't take that sharp abuse
i've mentioned before that a lot of the locals in marrakech didn't really like having their picture taken. this led me to go for the morally dubious, but photographically satisfying, technique of shooting from the hip. i would walk around the market with my camera hanging around my neck and point and click without seeing what i was taking a picture of. most of the time of course it ends up a badly composed mess, but every now and then i end up with something like this. i tried this same technique when i was in miami with far less satisfying results. i was walking along south beach when i saw this huge black dude wearing a stars and stripes shirt, stars and stripes pants, stars and stripes hat... it looked like the american flag had thrown up on him. i walked past and snapped a covert pic, but didn't get more than a few metres before he aggressively shouted after me. he made me delete the photo in front of him before giving me a bit more abuse, as i offered panicked apologies. the worst part was when i looked back at the soon to be deleted shot i saw that it was a perfectly timed and framed composition. what can i say, it's a risky technique, and you can't win them all.
