a psychedelic angel
i was unfamiliar with yayoi kusama before i went to see her exhibition in oslo. that's not a hugely surprising fact as i don't follow the art scene, what i did find surprising is that despite this i was probably still in a minority. after a little bit of research (yeah i mean wikipedia) it turns out she's kind of a big deal. in fact one of her pieces was sold a couple of years ago for $7.1 million - a record for a living, female artist. my research also made me feel bad that i had flippantly described her as a 'crazy japanese lady', as when she returned from new york to japan in the 1970s she (voluntarily) checked herself in to mental hospital where she's been ever since. after seeing her work and reading about her i'd like to upgrade that description to a pretty awesome japanese lady.
