the air outside
it's funny how fear can have a different effect on people. there are those who wouldn't even consider attempting a big ski jump because it's just too scary. there are those who go for it like in this photo, who i assume must still feel a bit of fear, but have a bravery or confidence to go with it. then there's me. i find myself terrified of doing a big snowboarding jump yet compelled to try. when i went snowboarding back in march i spent a lot of time in the snow park trying a few small and medium jumps and watching the braver people do the big jumps. my technique is usually a confident start, followed by panic and slowing down as i get closer and closer to the ramp. it doesn't result in that many falls, but it's far from spectacular either. on the last day i decided to have at least one go at the big jump and barely had enough speed to make it over. and even that felt terrifying. so i remain in awe of people who can catch as much air as this.
