towards the end of my weeklong road trip in namibia we drove the 5 hour journey from swakopmund to sossusvlei. we left a little later than we'd have liked so the sun started to set midway into the drive and we didn't arrive until after dark. this resulted in a few cool sights along the way, including a magical sunset and moonrise. the highlight was just after it got dark and we saw two shining lights on the road ahead of us. we slowed down before identifying that the lights were the reflections of the eyes of a wild hyena, and with the car stopped we spotted at least two more. when you put the car in reverse a screen on the dashboard displayed the view from a camera on the back of the vehicle. this switched to night vision when the light was low, which enhanced the spooky experience of three hyenas stalking and circling the car. despite a plethora of camera equipment inside the car none of us thought of capturing them, instead we just stared in wonder out of the windows.
