warship my wreck
last month i spent almost two weeks in and around cape town. i’ve been a few times before, but for a few reasons it was a different experience this time around, partly because cape town has been going through a serious drought. it was so serious that there were genuine concerns that the region would hit day zero in april. day zero being when the city turns off the taps, which would mark the first time it has occurred in a populous, major city and is of course all kinds of bad news. thankfully they’ve managed to avoid reaching this tipping point so far, which in a large part is testament to a huge shift in societal behaviour. from taking less than 2 minutes in the shower to using hand sanitiser to wash your hands in the bathroom, there’s a collective effort on both a micro and macro level to consume less water and make a difference. it was actually really nice to see that despite all the terrible things we do, humans can still come together and force positive change for the greater good. on the day i flew back the weather turned and torrential rain began falling from the sky. my initial british reaction was one of disappointment that the sunny blue skies had receded, but when i saw the beaming smiles of the people around me i realised i wasn't recognising it as the gift it was. i instantly felt happier and hopeful that things can get better.
