a picture of success
despite the illusion of planning, i had no idea what i was really going to be doing in mexico until the day after i arrived. and truth be told i hadn't been thinking too much about the trip, as other things at work were dominating my thoughts. i ended up renting a car for a few days and taking a roundabout drive from cancun to isla holbox. i set off a bit late for the last ferry, which meant that i'd only be able to make it to the last boat if i put my foot down and there weren't any unforeseen delays. about 30 minutes away from the ferry terminal i accidentally ran over a black and red snake, and about 20 minutes away i suffered a flat tyre. this was almost certainly from going too fast over the 500th pothole in the road, but i like to think in a karmic rebalance the snake had dug its teeth into my spinning tyre, its last act of revenge as i took away its life. fair play seƱor snake. i now faced changing a flat tyre on the side of a dark jungle road which i knew was infested with (probably angry) snakes. this picture on the paradisiacal island was far from present in my mind. an abuelo, two police officers and a young boat driver were amongst a few important characters to help me realise this picture of success.
