wash the day
when i was working in bali last month i was based in a place on the south coast called seminyak. it reminded me of playa del carmen in cancun, super touristy and full of drunken gringos. if i had returned home straight after work i would have had a very poor impression of the island. fortunately i did not do that, instead i travelled north to place called ubud where i visited waterfalls, temples and rice terraces. this rice terrace, tegalalang, was one of the more popular ones, and we thought it would be cool to get up extra early and visit it for sunrise. what i didn't realise until i arrived was that the sun rose from behind the terraces, so instead of warm light and long shadows i just got a face full of light. on the plus side we beat all of the tourists so we had the vast rice terraces almost exclusively to ourselves, and ended up exploring the the best part of four hours.
