such great heights
i only spent a few days in zimbabwe in 2016 as i was finishing work in south africa and was only permitted a week off before i had to return to work in london. my main ambition was to get here to victoria falls, so that’s pretty much all i saw of the country. i did fly into a different city called bulawayo where i had intended to take a train to the waterfall. i was advised against this by my zimbabwean colleague but i thought it could be a fun adventure to travel by rail in a different country. unfortunately the train station was completely empty when i got there, and i learned that all the trains were cancelled due to a strike. so instead i sought out a local bus to make the journey. that was an experience by itself as i was the only tourist taking that method of transport. it took me back to my days traversing south america by land and remains my preferred way of travelling to get a more authentic feel for a new country.
