for a poet
this is asalbai, an old man who i met when walking around the village of tosor in kyrgyzstan. he spoke really good english, having spent some of his life in scotland, and recited poetry in a deep, grandiose voice that reminded me of sir patrick stewart. everything he said sounded so much more profound and important as a result, particularly when he was talking about the power of nature and the mountains. i asked if i could take his photo and he insisted i film him instead as he launched into a polemic which ended with him, my friend and i repeating what soberness conceals, drunkenness reveals three times in unison. a strange but friendly and fascinating character.
