i only managed one overseas trip last year, when i travelled to albania in september, and this was my favourite photo from the trip. i was pretty exhausted after spending the day trekking for over 9 hours in the albanian mountains. i was warmed by the food and conversation i shared with other travellers and locals in the evening, although the temperature outside at night turned pretty chilly. despite this i still wanted to get some star photos before i went to bed, if nothing else because i had lugged a tripod over the mountain with me, so i felt obligated to actually use it. i set it up next to a nearby lake, thinking that i might be able to get some kind of starry reflections. suddenly the sky began to grow brighter and i realised that the moon was rising behind the distant mountains. i was annoyed at first, as the bright moon would extingush the stars i wanted to capture. however as it came into view i realised how incredibly lucky i was with both timing and position that it crept into the centre of my frame and the reflection stretched towards me across the water. it was one of those unplanned, magical moments which i love to discover when travelling.
