monumental
a couple of weeks ago i was flying into buenos aires at the same time that argentina were playing australia in the last 16 of the world cup. it was a shame i couldn't watch the match on the ground, but it was also a pretty surreal experience as the pilot piped in the spanish commentary when argentina scored and ultimately won the game. on the way to the airport we flew over el monumental (which incidentally i had last seen when it was set on fire by their local rivals) and they were showing the game inside there before a concert, you can even see messi's face if you zoom into stage screens. i would have loved to have stayed a bit longer in buenos aires, two week or so would have been perfect, as i can only imagine the celebrations they're having after winning the world cup today. after england were knocked out i wanted argentina to win the whole thing, it felt like a just reward for messi who is overwhelmingly the best footballer i've ever seen. having stakes in a game makes it so much more engaging, and the chaotic nature of the game ensured that it will be unforgettable as well. as the guy i sat next to on the flight exclaimed after they made their way into the quarter finals - ¡vamos carajo!
i thought i'd include a bonus photo, taken from my transfer to the hotel after touching down
