if you're feeling sinister
the first penguin i saw on my trip was two days into the voyage when we made it to the falkland islands. now being british i was certainly aware of these islands, but i knew very few details about them. my understanding was that they were a cold, windy isolated place which were mainly inhabited by sheep, which again, being british, didn't sound hugely exotic or exciting. by contrast i arrived to blue skies, warm sun and animals which i can best describe as 'not sheep'. ok i can probably do a better description than that, this animal is a rockhopper penguin, named after their method of travelling around their colony on land. they have a sinister appearance, from their slicked back hair, downward sloping eyebrows and satanic red eyes. in theory they could look a bit scary, but in reality watching a 50cm bird with funny hair hopping from rock to rock just brought a smile to my face.
