through the minefield
i've already spoken about how the fur seals in south georgia are aggressively territorial if you stray too close to them. i experienced this first hand in the first landing spot on the island in salisbury plain. there was a carefully planned route that we were required to take, whilst also being aware of any animals that could cut into the path. i was one of the last to return back to the boats, and as i got closer to the beach i saw an off piste shortcut which looked pretty clear. as i started to divert down it the crew at the landing site all looked alert and began gesturing me to go back, and i then saw the attention i was also receiving from the belligerent fur seals who started to close in. i retreated to take the longer, safer route back to the beach, disinclined to discover what would happen if i got too close to these landmines.
