overwhelming hostility
the last couple of photos were clear examples of how fur seals react when another of their kind wander into their territory. they would also become protective and aggressive if humans were to infringe on their spot of land, a fact i can verify with personal experience. however it appeared as though king penguins receive a free pass as they would waddle around the same stretch of beach without raising so much as a snarl from the pinnipeds. i imagine this is because fur seals have learned that penguins pose zero threat, and are also likely to scamper away without needing a great deal of encouragement. it made the whole beach scene somewhat farcical with multiple seals shouting and chasing each other while the nonchalant penguins would ignore the commotion and stroll the same patch of sand untroubled by their noisy neighbours.
