to fly into the crystal kingdom
after our final morning in south georgia we set sail south to antarctica on a journey that would include two full days at sea. it was in the afternoon on the second of those days when we looked out of the ship windows and began to see huge tabular icebergs. before too long we found the ship engulfed in a huge ice barrier that surrounded us in all directions. the ship slowed to carefully manoeuvre through these changing conditions and i joined all of the passengers up to the bow deck to take in the spectacle. similar to the snow petrels, these cape petrels can move pretty rapidly, so i attempted to capture them whenever i saw them fly past as we carved through the ice.
