riding the rails
travelling on the train in india is pretty iconic, and while i'm still yet to do a big regional train ride in the country, i did take a few local trains when i was in mumbai. it's far quicker than the slow moving traffic on the roads, and as a result its one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world, carrying more than 7.5 million people each day. fortunately i didn't travel at a busy time so i was easily able to get a seat... although i soon gave this up when i realised that the doors don't close so you can hang on the outside. i later learned that on average around 5 people die each day while taking the trains, although i believe that's more connected to overcrowding and crossing the tracks on foot. regardless i held on tightly with one hand as i attempted to focus and compose photos of other hangers on, with frequent checks behind to be sure there were no obstacles speeding towards me.
