cracking the case
my next stop after pondicherry was a return trip to chennai, but this time with the intention of seeing more than just the airport. annoyingly things didn't really go quite as i intended and i awoke the morning after i arrived feeling unwell. it was familiar cold like symptoms which i'm very used to from living in london, so i spent most of my first week switching between working in bed and resting in bed. as is often the way boredom arrived before i was fully recovered so i went for a walk along marina beach and looped back through the city. this urge to leave my room happened to arrive on a weekend so the beach was very busy with families, enacting a classic indian beach scene with everyone fully dressed and tentatively paddling in the water. at the end of the beach there was a beautiful monument built to memorialise a former politician from tamil nadu who's funeral in the late 60s was apparently the biggest in history with 15 million attendees. i wanted to take photos of the architecture, but it was so crowded that i had the idea it would be better to return early in a morning with less people. what i failed to take into account was that i would struggle to find the energy to wake up early enough to make that happen, so it remained just an idea. regardless my favourite photo from this little walkabout was at the entrance arch to the memorial where i saw these two police officers engrossed in a rubik's cube. i don't want to cast aspersions on their professionalism, but i swear 15 million criminals could have descended upon the monument and they both would still be focused on getting those coloured squares to line up.
