the first part of my indian trip had a loose plan to it, i arrived in mumbai and headed south to kerala to meet up with my friend in time for new years eve. whilst the second part was still relatively unplanned, it had my friend arriving in kerala and leaving from chennai, so i still had an idea where it may start and end for the month of january. i was now in the third part and there truly was no plan at all. i had around two months until my visa meant i needed to leave the country, but it's possible to leave the country from multiple ports, so i really had the choice of going anywhere in that time. i figured i should see what was nearby so i opened up a map, i had arrived from the south, and to the east was the indian ocean, so that immediately made it a bit easier. as i was in the capital of the southernmost state of india there was quite a lot up north, but i had arrived here by plane which meant that i had skipped over the west between here and kerala. so i eventually settled on a place south west from my location which i picked largely because it had a cool looking temple. after booking transport and accommodation i wondered if there were any temples worth seeing in chennai before i left. turns out that arguably the most famous one is called kapaleeshwarar temple and was less than 20 minutes walk from where i was staying. so the day before i left town i strolled down and watched the late afternoon sun cast a warm glow on the giant gopuram as the colours popped out from the adorning vahanas.
