stranger in the mirror
last month i watched what would end up being my favourite film of the year, a movie called flow. i knew almost nothing about it in advance, other than a friend recommended it after i had seen robot dreams, which was another great watch. i understood the connection as both films are animated and the stories are told without any dialogue, this constraint is super important as it means the storytelling needs such careful care and attention. with flow the story's protagonist is a cat, who is joined by other animals that have to navigate their way through an ever changing landscape. it made me think of the works of fumito ueda, a videogame designer who has made some of my favourite ever games including ico and shadow of the colossus. there were also parallels with gromit (from wallace and) where a silent character emotes so much through expressions and movement, which somehow become even more powerful than words ever could. it's honestly such a beautiful film which i believe will be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age, background or language. one of the first things i googled after watching it was 'do animals recognise themselves when they look in the mirror', which is why it feels appropriate to bring it up along with this shot of a distracted dog who enjoyed the water as the sunset on another day in koh pha ngan.
