until the colours appear
one of my first impressions when i arrived in taipei was how safe it felt. i'd go out exploring late at night and frequently see both men and women of all ages walking alone in unlit streets with seemingly less concerns than you'd expect in most other big cities. the first area i stayed in wasn't very touristy, so another early impression was that english wasn't widely spoken in the country. this thought was somewhat dispelled when i moved to an airbnb in the ximen area which had a lot more lights, sounds and people. the neighbourhood had a cool arty vibe, the day i checked in i saw a film crew shooting a movie on my doorstep, and the street around the corner was lined by this colourful graffiti. as a result the city definitely grew on me the longer i stayed.
