often when i travel to a new place i'll book the first few nights in advance, and if i like it there i'll extend to stay longer. most of the time this system works out fine, however occasionally i'll leave it to the last minute only to discover that the place is fully booked out. this happened when i was in yogyakarta and i had to find somewhere else to stay for a weekend, so i immediately thought of moving closer to my favourite volcano. i had been returning to the same viewpoint on previous visits, so i wanted to explore around the mountain and see if i could get a little closer, or at least get a different angle. the first night didn't quite go to plan as my attempts to get closer culminated in me sharing sandwiches with some miners in a dusty quarry as merapi was obscured by thick grey clouds. the second night offered a few short windows of fairly clear skies, so after i took some close up shots of the erupting peak, i retreated to a bridge to get a different angle of the volcano. i returned back to my familiar abode after the weekend, but merapi continued to have a magnetic pull which kept me coming back
