when you go to a new place, and you don't know a great deal about the culture or history, tension and hostility towards others can seem strange, even a little silly. every country seems to have another country, whether for good reason or not, that they just plain don't like. there's canada and the us, new zealand and australia, ireland/wales/scotland and england. this image on a monument across lake titcaca from san pablo tiquina shows how the bolivians (in addition to peruvians) feel about chile. the ruckus came about due to the war of the pacific, i haven't read up on that so i couldn't really pass judgement. but i do like the unashamed violence and gore of the monument, and just above the chilean's speared head there was a cool phrase which reads:
lo que un dia fue neustro, nuestro otra vez sera
which translates to:
what was once ours, will be ours again
