i discovered different challenges when i rented a scooter in india and thailand, with the former the roads were not good quality so you had to contend with various bumps and potholes, which is all before considering the other hazards such as other traffic, pedestrians and animals. it wasn't quite as bad in thailand, although as i've mentioned before the steep hills i found in koh pha ngan and tao were pretty sketchy on an old bike with dodgy brakes. so i felt like i levelled up when it came to taiwan. the bike i rented was brand new and the roads themselves were significantly better quality with huge lanes dedicated for bikes and scooters. little details like having a phone holder was a gamechanger when i was riding in an unknown place for the first time. i'd say the only issue i noticed when riding was that the traffic lights tended to be higher than average, which made it tricky in a city at night when the red lights would blend in with the red neon signs. in fact the biggest negative was that a lot of places i tried refused to rent a scooter to foreigners so i wasn't able to enjoy the superior riding conditions as much as i wanted.
