wide eyed and hopeful
four years ago i stayed up all night to watch the us election, and awoke the following morning to the horrible news that trump had been elected president. it was a dark day, and a stark reminder that life isn't a fairytale and good doesn't always defeat evil. so it was with immense trepidation that on tuesday night i repeated the same ritual, praying that history wouldn't repeat itself. i spent the next four days with cnn driving me increasingly insane as the results slowly trickled through, until yesterday afternoon the call was finally made that trump had been defeated. the map and numbers on my tv were replaced with footage from around america of people taking to the streets in celebration, an outpouring of joy and relief that i've never witnessed before in my lifetime. it's how i imagine people would react when an oppressive dictator is toppled and the people are set free. a global exhalation. not only did the country reject hate, but they took an extra step forward by electing the first ever biracial, female vice president, proving positive change and progress can be a reality. the world didn't end four years ago, but it definitely became a darker, scarier place, this morning it feels so much lighter and more hopeful.
