magic ships you carry
just before i went to cape town my dad got me a new camera for my birthday - a lomo fisheye 2. it had been over 15 years since i last used a non-digital camera and my first impressions when using this new camera was that it was pretty unsatisfying. you receive no haptic feedback when you press the shutter button, to the extent it feels like nothing has happened and you have no idea whether the photo you just took even captured let alone worked. i eventually realised that far from unsatisfying, this was actually exciting. there would be no trial and error or the instant gratification you get with digital, with analog you just (silently) click and move on. and when you get around to developing the film you're presented with little revelations, of shots you didn't even remember taking. the ones that work feel extra satisfying, the ones that don't are no big deal. for me it's a completely different way of thinking about photography, and certainly made me want to experiment more with film. this was my favourite from my debut roll, mabu vinyl record store in cape town, which was featured in the amazing documentary searching for sugar man.
