where the bats and moonlight laugh
deer cave in mulu is home to around 3 million bats. we were told that if they were feeling hungry, we could watch them perform their 'bat exodus' as they fly out in search of food at around 5pm. unfortunately i exited the cave in dire need of medical attention so i couldn't hang around. not wanting to miss out the next day i hobbled the six kilometre round trip in the hope of witnessing the spectacle. nothing happened for about an hour, and then the following hour i couldn't take my eyes off the sky as an endless stream of bats flew from the mouth of the cave.
