as i took a bus into the jungle i was feeling pretty bummed out as the doctor had told me my injury was worse than i thought. there also wasn't so much wildlife around in kinabatangan river when i arrived. my fortunes changed the next morning as we were lucky to briefly see an orangutan swinging in the trees. even better was to come later in the afternoon when we saw this even bigger one in amongst the bare branches of one of the tallest trees. we stopped the boat and stared in awe into the tree for about 15 minutes, i was so transfixed that i didn't even notice it had started to rain. it's a little bittersweet getting to see the apes so close to the river, the only reason they venture so close is because so much of their habitat has been destroyed. despite the terrible impact this has had on the population, it's still good to see them acting like kings at the top of the jungle.
