darkness descends
so the boat ride took me to this cave, where i had to hobble up and down an arduous number of stairs. the descent was particularly uncomfortable, but i really didn't want my injury to prevent me from from enjoying my trip. a couple of days later i flew to a bigger town and went to see a different doctor to check on my progress. as soon as he saw my foot he made a face which i'm pretty sure you're taught not to show to patients. he dismissed my antibiotics as being ineffective, the ointment useless, and questioned why i hadn't been washing the wound. basically why didn't i do the opposite of what the village doctor told me. consequently he said my foot had become massively infected and he'd need to scrape it out - a procedure which is exactly as unpleasant as you're imagining. i was then given the 'right medication' and instructed to clean it thoroughly twice a day. i started to become more concerned about my trip, and told him i was intending on going to the jungle later, followed by climbing a mountain and then scuba diving. the face came out again as he made it very clear how that was a terrible idea. that wasn't nice to hear. but in my head a worse idea was travelling to borneo and missing out on all of that, so i said thank you, limped around the block and boarded a bus to the jungle.
