last week i made my annual visit to holland park, a tradition which i started 7 years ago and one that i always mark with a photograph. i walked around the koi pond in the japanese garden when a large grey heron flew in and perched on the water's edge. i positioned myself on the other side with my zoom lens, with the idea of trying to snap a shot when it opened it's wings to fly away. i waited patiently, trying to pick up on any slight indications that it was about to move, but instead it remained motionless until dark blur obscured my view and moved in front of my lens. as i adjusted my vision from the eyepiece of my camera back to the real world i saw this peacock casually strolling a couple of feet in front of me. i was very aware that peacocks dwell in this park, but it's always been my camera searching for them and not the other way around. the peacock waited for me to compose myself and this picture as i zoomed out from the heron, relegating it to a blurry background character to be replaced by this far more majestic bird.
