these cetaceans were the first that i spotted on my trip, a trip which also involved learning the word cetacean. this specific kind is called a commerson's dolphin, and there were quite a number in the waters around the falkland islands. the best thing about dolphins is that they are inherently curious and social animals, which meant they would frequently come up to the ship and swim alongside us. in fact when we were heading back to the ship from stanley, the capital of the falkland islands, a pod of commerson's dolphins swam around our zodiac. i plunged my phone into the water to try and capture them on video, but they move so rapidly i only managed to get a few seconds - if you're curious you can see those seconds on my instagram post
