drag the lake
there were a few reasons why i chose thailand as my first country after leaving india, and most of them revolved around simplicity. for starters i knew that i wouldn't need to apply for a visa to get into the country, which is a big plus for someone who struggles with being organised. also i knew that it was very popular with tourists, which would normally put me off, however there weren't so many foreign tourists in india so this kinda appealed in the moment. particularly as it would mean that arranging things such as transport and accommodation would be easier. when i was in kerala i was chatting to another digital nomad who talked highly of kho pha ngan as place to stay and work. i hadn't been to this island before, and i only knew of it as a place where they host a full moon party with teenagers and (very) young adults getting completely wasted. however she reassured me that this only happened every month (the clue being full moon) and more promisingly it's only in the south east of the island - the vibe in other parts was far more chilled and relaxed. i guess this conversation planted a seed in my head, i knew that i had some work coming in which would be keeping me busy, and the idea of going for a swim in the ocean after finishing work on a tropical island sounded very appealing. what i didn't fully appreciate was that the waters surrounding this island were super shallow, illustrated by this fisherman who was walking far out to sea while the water never crept above waist height. so i didn't end up swimming as much as floating in the warm, tropical waters.
