30th July 2015

there's only one way out - extra image

a few hours into a hot and sweaty photowalk in miami my colleague and i spied a huge, distant green arm and hand reaching out from the ground. it looked like a cool sculpture to photograph, and it was only when we got a bit closer that we realised it was jutting out of a black lake as part of a holocaust memorial. getting closer still, we discovered that the arm and hand were actually composed of multiple human figures. when i finally made it to the foot (so to speak) of the sculpture i realised that these figures were tortured victims of the holocaust, with unimaginable pain, fear and anguish chiseled into each face. it was astonishing... and heartbreaking... and amazing... and disturbing... it was both beautiful as a piece of art and horrific as a piece of history - exactly as it should be.

this is the tunnel which led to the sculpture itself, i recorded the journey through it on my new phone, so you can check out the video
