carry that weight - extra image
towards the end of my trip in kyrgyzstan i organised a last minute two day trek to koshkol lakes in the alay valley. it was tough to know what to bring in my backpack, i knew that it would get cold at night so warm clothes were essential, but i also knew that the stars would come out so i needed a tripod. add food, water and a heavy camera to the list and i really started to feel the weight as i ascended to over 4000m. the small satisfaction was that i used absolutely everything that i brought with me, including wearing all of the clothes that were in my bag. when that still didn't cut it against the cold my guide went on a quick hunt and returned with an armful of yak shit. it was a special moment chatting under the stars by the lakes, cold from the altitude, but warmed by the flaming yak shit.
