ain't it the life - extra image
i spoke yesterday about having some frustrations at photographing the whales that i encountered in the waters around antarctica. however i had seen whales before, the one animal that i hadn't seen before and really hoped i would was a killer whale. i was inside the ship when an announcement was made that the captain had slowed down the ship as orcas had been spotted close by. i immediately ran outside with my camera and frantically began scanning the horizon and asking others where they had last been seen. despite their distinctive markings, they weren't that easy to spot in a vast ocean dotted with icebergs. but this photo is proof that i eventually did, and was made all the more special as it was pretty much the last photo i took on the trip. we had already begun our journey north from antarctica and were on our way to cross the drake passage, so this was a fittingly magical farewell to a special part of the planet.
