on a mission
after a couple of nights in the jungle i returned back to sandakan and back to see the doctor. he'd given me a rather pessimistic diagnosis when i last saw him, and despite cleaning my wound as instructed it didn't seem to me as though it was much better. it's a good job i'm not a doctor as when he saw it he was delighted with the progress and said it had massively improved. my big concern was whether i could go scuba diving in one weeks time, which he still advised against, or at least said that i'd need to go when the wound had healed. i knew that this wouldn't be the case in one week, so i started to think of creative solutions. my eventual one consisted of taping a sticky plaster, followed by a less sticky waterproof plaster, taped at the edges with even stickier tape. i hoped this would create a waterproof barrier between the ocean and my damaged foot. if it didn't (and spoiler alert: it didn't) then i figured the worse case scenario was that it would get infected by something in the water, and i'd be back in london a few days after where i could get it treated again. rationalising the tentatively positive consultation this way meant that i left the surgery in a much better mood and a swing in my limping step.
