the monkeys will fly - extra image
not far from sandakan, where i saw the doctor after returning from the jungle, is the sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre. with a few hours to kill until an afternoon bus ride, i didn't need any excuse to check it out. there was no guarantee that you would see orangutans, as fortunately the centre is huge and they have plenty of space to roam, however it's more likely during the morning and afternoon feeding sessions. this food is a compliment to what they forage elsewhere for themselves, not their primary source of food. this is clearly a good thing, although it did make the odds of seeing them that bit longer. and so it proved that not one orangutan approached the feeding platform, instead a troop of long tailed macaques stalked around the area and took full advantage of the free buffet. don't get me wrong i'd have loved to have seen the orangutans up close, but i had a pretty special experience a few days prior, and i'll never complain about watching monkeys jump around.
