in between going from cusco to bolivia i went to lake titicaca which sits at almost 4000m above sea level and is one of the highest navigable lakes in the world. that sounds pretty impressive but i think the peruvians and bolivians are being a bit liberal with their definition of the word navigable. i thought that meant you could sail across it, but i'm sure there's no reason why you couldn't get on a boat on lakes that are higher than this. i think they mean that you can actually sail big ships on it, though i'm not sure why you'd want to, and i don't think that alone is particularly astonishing. still, it is pretty high up and bloody big.
